From ‘Their Attitudes Differ’ – Margaret Atwood

We invite your submissions for a collection exploring how we conceal the truth from ourselves in order to better cope with loss and heartache. Use poetry, prose, photography, collage or original art. We will create an exhibition and a zine collecting these experiences entitled I Hate That You Birdwatch. Submissions may cover any aspect of recovery from the breakdown of a relationship, the loss of someone you love or any major change in life. We’re asking you to explore the things you usually hide from.

Submission parameters

Submissions should be A4 size – maximum 2 sidesSubmissions can use found objects, text and original imagery.

Bex Massey - Fox Irving's Interpretations :

‘Guevara to Goody’ is Bex Massey’s first solo guerrilla drawing exhibition. The show came about after her research into Media images which are said to define the age. What became swiftly apparent was the lack of women in said photographs. Women in differing collections based upon this theme were either documented due to their attire, or being on the arm of the subject. Not one female was there because of their impact on history.

This seemed a warped reference to women’s history, so she set about producing a collection of imagery which better represented the highs and lows of femininity. She further illustrates the inequality surrounding the way in which women are documented in the Media by drawing comparisons between the iconic male and female counterparts.

In this series Bex asks the audience to further explore and reassess the way in which each person has been documented in the tabloids and literary texts. She utilises overt clusters to direct the viewer as to the nature of their apparent failures and triumphs. This is used to great effect as the image association that one would usually create with such icons disappears and we are able to create new and less obvious connections.

This series is also part of an interactive project that she embarked upon with the art collective VV. An artist book based upon the series will be donated to two institutions. For more information about how to get involved and published in the limited editions please visit: wearevv.wordpress.com/
